The word "tropic" refers to feeding, and the "tropic level" describes the feeding level in a food chain. The first tropic level includes the species known as primary producers (Water Encyclopedia).
Summary:
All living organism within an ecosystem depend on the tropic level as an energy source in order to survive. Due to thermodynamics energy is always lost to the environment whenever the animal is eaten by another. Primary producers are the zooplankton who are herbivores who eat diatom and algae. They are then eaten by larger herbivores are eaten by carnivores who are then eaten by even larger carnivores and so on. Because energy is lost between tropic level it is to the consumer's advantage to feed as close to the primary producer as possible. This cycle forms a pyramid of energy from one source to another.
As the photographs show the each tropic level consist of organism that it gets its energy from. In the photo each step is a tropic level starting with the primary. Each step in this food chain creates a web giving the fishery a biomass of food in order to survive.
